Diabetes, Previous Joint Pain And Overall Physical Health Predicts Arthritis Pain — Sciencedaily

With rheumatoid arthritis, the joint lining becomes inflamed as part of a disease process that affects the entire body. In this study, researchers created an algorithm, based on data from the 2011-2012 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, to determine factors and patterns that contribute to pain for a national representative sample of 5,721 U.S. adults with arthritis. The sample’s mean age was 60.14 years and the average household income was $52,275. The study authors looked at more than 1,000 variables pertaining to demographics, medical claims, laboratory tests, patient-reported outcomes, employment history, health insurance, medical expenditures and socio-behavioral characteristics. Patient health status was determined through use of the SF-12 Health Component Survey, which assesses whether or not a person’s pain or overall health limits him or her from completing daily activities, such as climbing stairs.

Diabetes Drug Spurs Host Defense | Eurekalert! Science News

They also found that pioglitazone enhanced the ability of the cells from the CGD mouse model to kill Staphylococcus aureus and Burkholdia cepacia, two pathogens that are difficult to treat and common in CGD. The researchers found that the additional ROS come not directly from NADPH oxidase, which is not functional in CGD patients, but from mitochondria, the energy producing organelles within the white blood cells. “These findings demonstrate that pioglitazone can promote the production of ROS from mitochrondria of white blood cells,” said Dr. Bratton.

Dentists Might Be Able To Screen For Diabetes – Yahoo News

Worldwide, nearly one in 10 adults had diabetes in 2014, and the disease will be the seventh leading cause of death by 2030, according to the World Health Organization. Most of these people have type 2, once known as adult-onset, diabetes, which is associated with obesity and aging and happens when the body can’t properly use or make enough of the hormone insulin to convert blood sugar into energy. Strauss and colleagues focused their research on testing hemoglobin A1c, a protein in red blood cells that gets coated with sugar over time, making it a gauge of average blood sugar levels for the past two or three months. The researchers collected blood samples taken from the gums and the fingers of 408 people treated at dental clinics in New York City. They tested for diabetes, when A1c is at least 6.5 percent, and for elevated prediabetic A1c levels of at least 5.7 percent. To make sure they got enough blood from the gums, they only included people in the study who said that their gums bled when they brushed or flossed their teeth. The study team also limited participation to people at greatest risk for diabetes.
